2 Introduction

Back to table of contents

This book is truly a Book of Lists. There are lists of humanities (philosophy, religion, history, literature, and art) related books and lists of disaster supplies as well as lists of food, music, and Apple iPad recommendations. This books of lists was put together to help prepare people for the future, which will likely go in one of 2 directions, or a combination of the 2: we might lose most our technology and social structures because of our overwhelming number of major problems we face in the modern world and revert back to a civilization more like the 19th, the 13th, or even the 5th century AD; or we might find a new source of energy that will propel us into a future more like Star Trek or other Sci Fi movies than like the 20th century. Either way it is likely the study of the humanities will fade as people see technology as the solution to our problems and destroy and be out of touch with the natural world, or that we are so focused on survival that we don't have time to read or even have access to books like we do today. In between scenarios include many disasters and some very advanced technologies mixed with some very traditional ones. These lists will help provide a guide to the resources to make the best of the future, no matter what that entails. This book plus many more books and much more content is available for free download at my website at www.benjamin-newton.com

3 Recommended Media Short List

"I shall ever try to keep all untruths out from my thoughts, knowing that thou art that truth which has kindled the light of reason in my mind." --Rabindranath Tagore

3.1 Criteria for Inclusion

Back to table of contents

  1. If you see a book that you think should be on the list but is not, likely I have already read it and didn't include it because it was too hard for others to read or it was poorly written including being too repetitive or not being clear and concise.

  2. I have also particularly focused on Asian and classical texts, and have especially tried to limit the Greek, Roman, white American and English writing to as few works as possible, because I think those areas are over read and I have little interest in them after having to read so many of them in high school.

  3. Most of the works I have included I agree with or at least partly agree with and believe can be useful for personal growth except for most the books or the topics contained in "Establishment History" categories which I believe are only worthwhile for understanding history.

  4. I also have usually only included one book by each author and not necessarily the most famous, but rather the most useful one.

  5. Another consideration is the cost and availability of the works. For works that are difficult to find or expensive to buy, I have generally stayed away from.

  6. I generally avoid female writers as most of them I cannot understand.

  7. This is also a great list for Christians who want to study world religions and philosophies without studying the occult.

  8. The Qu'ran (Koran) is not listed as it must be read in Arabic.

3.2 Order of Reading for the Most Fundamental Texts

Back to table of contents

When I studied about Buddhism it took me a very long time, because I read the most difficult to understand of the most important Buddhist Sutras (the Lotus Sutra) first and read in reverse of the order that makes the most sense. I also have realized that recommending over 250 books is too much for most people (even those very serious and ambitious about studying the major world belief systems). The following list is a recommended order, to read the most important Asian-focused texts about the major world belief systems. This is definitely not the order of most importance, but rather the best for understanding the relationships between and evolution of the various major belief systems. If you want to study the different Asian philosophies and religions, I recommend studying Hinduism before Buddhism and Confucianism before Taoism and also to study Legalism, Neo-Confucianism, Jainism, and the Sikh faith as well to get a more complete picture.

I would recommend ideally reading the following, in the following order:
